Bringing care to the patient – the rise of mobile health in clinical research

As a nurse, you’ve always been a vital link between care and compassion. You meet people in their most vulnerable moments and help them feel safe, understood and seen. But what if your role could evolve beyond traditional settings – offering more freedom, flexibility and impact?

That’s exactly what mobile health in clinical research is making possible.

At Seacole Health, we work with experienced nurses around the globe to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care directly in participants’ homes. As part of mdgroup, we offer our nurses opportunities to work on studies that are pushing the boundaries of medicine, all while supporting their personal and professional growth.

Together, we’re helping clinical trials become more accessible, inclusive and effective – while creating meaningful and flexible career opportunities for nurses.

What is mobile health in clinical research?

Mobile health is a growing part of the clinical research landscape. Rather than asking patients to travel to a hospital or research site for every visit, mobile health allows study procedures to take place in the patient’s own environment and on their own terms.

As a mobile health nurse, you bring the research visit to them – ensuring protocols are carried out accurately, while putting patient comfort and convenience first.

This can include a wide range of clinical procedures delivered in the home. At Seacole Health, our mobile health professionals are trained to manage everything from lab sample collection and in-home processing to investigational product (IP) administration and specialist assessments, all while maintaining the highest standards of data quality and protocol adherence.

Depending on the study, the mobile health nurse’s responsibilities could include:

  • Collecting and processing lab samples such as blood, urine, nasal swabs, wound swabs or oral mucosa
  • Conducting point-of-care testing (e.g. INR) and managing lab shipments (ambient, refrigerated, or frozen)
  • Performing EKGs, EEGs, ultrasounds, sonography and remote cardiac monitoring
  • Administering investigational products via subcutaneous, intravenous, oral, topical, ocular or inhalation routes
  • Managing IP accountability, temperature-controlled transport and direct-to-patient delivery
  • Supporting ventilator management, dietary monitoring, physical therapy and patient education
  • Resolving lab queries and working with both local and central labs across borders

At every stage, the goal remains the same: to deliver compassionate, high-quality care that supports both patient retention and the success of the trial.

Most importantly, these visits remove major barriers for patients – distance, time and disruption – while offering a more comfortable and accessible clinical trial experience.

Why become a mobile health nurse?

For many nurses, mobile health offers the best of both worlds: using your clinical expertise in a more independent, patient-focused role, while regaining a sense of work-life balance with broader options and flexibility. For many, clinical trials offer a space to thrive with many additional benefits:

Greater flexibility

Whether you’re looking for full-time hours, part-time visits or occasional assignments around another job or family life, mobile health nursing adapts to your needs. You choose which studies and schedules work for you, with the full support of the Seacole Health team.

Real connection with patients

In the comfort of their own home, patients are often more relaxed and open. This allows for deeper conversations, stronger trust and a more personal experience – something many nurses find incredibly rewarding.

Diverse and interesting work

Mobile health gives you the chance to participate in a wide variety of studies across different therapeutic areas – paediatrics, rare disease, oncology, neurology and more. You’ll be exposed to new learning, cutting-edge science and clinical innovation – all while supporting patients through their research journey.

A meaningful impact on the future of medicine

Clinical research can’t happen without the dedication of patients and the professionals who support them. By becoming a mobile health nurse, you’re helping reduce dropout rates, increase trial accessibility and ensure data is collected with care and accuracy. That’s a powerful contribution to healthcare on a global scale.

How Seacole Health supports you

Our nurses are never left to figure it out alone. When you work with Seacole Health, you become part of a supportive, professional network with access to everything you need to succeed.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Global opportunities: We support studies around the world – there’s a place for you on our team.
  • Clear training and protocols: We’ll make sure you feel confident in each study you support. You’ll receive comprehensive onboarding, study-specific training and protocol guidance. In a previous case study, we trained our HCPs to perform PBMC isolation at patients’ homes, a procedure typically performed in a laboratory setting by specially trained scientists – read how we did that here.
  • Ongoing support: Seacole Health is run by nurses for nurses, so we understand the needs and requirements on both human and professional level. You’ll have access to support whenever needed, so you’re never out there alone.
  • Efficient scheduling and logistics: We handle the coordination, materials, and communication – so you can focus on delivering excellent care.
  • Work that works for your life: Whether you want steady assignments or occasional flexibility, we match opportunities to your availability and preferences.

Bringing high standards of care globally to decentralised and site-based clinical trials with mdgroup

Seacole Health is proud to be part of mdgroup, a global company dedicated to improving the patient experience in clinical trials. Together, we help bring research to patients by reaching individuals who might not otherwise be able to participate.

This partnership means exciting opportunities for our nurses, more support behind each visit, and more impact for the patients we serve. In a recent case study with mdgroup we shared how a global CRO was struggling to retain their staff. Thanks to our support with hiring and seamless integration of our highly qualified nurses, the staffing shortages were solved and the clinical trial was able to continue.
